VJ Articles
Essays and articles added by our users on a broad range of topics relating to VJing and live performance video.
Electronica-Optica has worked out a deal with Vtechmedia that will allow Visual Artists and Producers to post and sell visual clips, loops, plug-ins, refills, project files, and more to interested VJs.
Vtechmedia operates through a browser-based Community, which allows producers to upload content, determine a set price, and collect royalties on a quarterly basis. VJs can browse through clips, select any they like, pay for them, and download them.
The main focus of the project are the video clips which sell for $1-2 each. Most are 320x240 and 640x480.
So, you have VJed a few clubs and parties and decided "Heh, i'm not getting enough for this! I wanna run my own night and roll in the money!" (We've all thought about it!). Then you think, "Oh Sh*t! I know nothing about sound sytems and lighting" (All those other "Oh Sh*t" moments will be covered in my later articles). For this reason I'm writing you all a guide to gigging in laymens terms.
Sound and lighting are two of the most important properties of your event and so they do need a bit of effort put into them!
Here's a quick tutotial on how to use Dynamic text in Resolume. Its recommended that you understand the basics of animating in Flash.
Basically, all you have to do is type out a block of text, one line preferrably, with default settings and animate it. It can be done with the type block directly on the stage or embedded in an instance of a symbol (if you know Flash, you know what i'm talking about). Once the animation is set the way you want it, you have to make some tweaks to the type block itself.

Before starting transzendent or even configuring your media you need to get this great little program exstracted from its .lzh archive, for that task I recommend lhasa017.exe which is a great desktop drag and drop decompressor for LZH.
New versions of TZT are being distributed in zip, so this is no longer necessary :)
Directory setups
Once you have TZT expanded with its directory structure in place you can fire it up for your firs
This tutorial is by no means a way to replace a real 3D program, but for the VJ who wants a series of high-impact clips that show some perspective camera moves, learning a complex interface, creating a realistic scene with lights and camera, and waiting for slow renders that tie up your computer can cancel out all the benefits to working with a 3D app. we're going to achieve the impact of motion 3D backgrounds in a fraction of the time with Artmatic's perspective tools.
Well things evolve, and now there are the laptops and software that mean you can gig from the lappy alone - not only leaving the van at home but taking on those uber rigs with new visual possibilities.
I made this jump in 2001, moving from mx30+v5+vhs+dvd+flash/laptop to an Apple Titanium Powerbook and Vidvox's VDMX.
So here is an article on how to set up your powerbook to give it a dual-use as mean vj machine without conflicting with its other lives.
this whole topic got discussed on eyecandy about six months ago, the big problem with us putting prices up here, is where there are areas where there are a lot of vj's competing for the same jobs, such as brighton/london posting our prices will only give the bottomfeeders a better idea of how much to undercut those of us trying to earn a living from it,
but yes it would be a good idea for there to be some way of giving newbies an idea of what to charge and setting some kind of minimum rate , the eyecandy discussion on this tho got bogged down in ppl wanting to unionise vj'ing "???" so here
2.21:1 Aspect Ratio - see Cinemascope
3:2 Pulldown - conversion of film frame rate material (24 fps) to NTSC video (29.97 fps) which results in the addition of approximately 6 frames per second. Pulldown frames are created by blending frames from the original source in a specific pattern, and is very undesirable in compressed movies.
4:1:1 Color - moderately compressed video color subsampling in which the luminance channel is not subsampled, but the chrominance channel has one quarter the resolution. Most of the DV formats, including miniDV, use 4:1:1 color.
This article is the first of a serie, i tried to compile the most frequently asked questions and to translate then in french, all comments are welcome!

A) Understanding the basics:
First to get to grips with Pixelshox you need to get accustomed with node based software. Node based software is very close from programming. But you do not need to know code routines. These routines a represented by plugins witch you connect to each other via virtual cables. Also known as graphical programming these peculiar interfaces resemble electronic components that you would solder one to the other at the clic of the mouse. You might have seen such interfaces using software such as Reason or Reaktor.
OK so like most newbies you see someone vj for the first time and you think thats cool, I want to get in for free / get paid to be here, or they get all the babes (all of which are true btw :p ) and so you decide you want to start mixing video live, you have 2 VCRs and so you need to be able to mix them together, you can just mix them like a DJ with a DJ mixer right???
To successfully get dual monitor working on a sony vaio k series laptop.
First you will need an A/V cable, which is identified by it's having three RCA phono connectors at one end, in the easily understood red, white and yellow colour scheme, and at the other end something like a little headphone plug, except it's got an extra ring on it. these aren't supplied but you can but them, they're known as camcorder cables.
Secondly you will need a tv or video that the laptop can detect. It won't work without one and unlike the nvidia display drivers, there's no forced detection option.
This article is an attempt to identify aspects of DMX that are of potential interest to VJs. The question begs some context, in this article the discussion will center around DMX opportunities that cost less than 4 figures (USD). Granted, a read through VJForums seems to suggest that, for a large number of VJs, money is no object, alas this is not the case for yours truly.
It helps to understand the basics of what DMX does, my previous article DMX 512: Brief Introduction gives a bit of information, I'll recap it here.
Performing batch operations on entire directories
OM: When I perform live, I use loop-based graphics on compositing engines, DVD's and mixers to always create a unique experience. I prepare event-specific DVD's with logo's, themes and characters to mix with content from my vast source-libraries. People often have spiritual experiences & revelations on the dance floor. As a VJ & Shaman I am guided by the voices of spirit that I call into manifestation through prayer.
If you are a creative person you probably have the experience of promote and sell your products. You may have seen the dark side of the moon and all it's strange characters trying to take advantage of your creativity? Well haven't we all. It leaves me with the question of who can I trust and do I need them?My answer is: I need them as they need me and for the trust I ask for motives and take my precaution.
Some times the business and the political community use a creative product or an artist to promo themselves and the artist goes along for the same reason and the money.
This chapter covers need to know basics about building a MIDI-Setup and the necessary hardware involved
MIDI Jacks
The visual interface of MIDI to the outside world is usually a trio of female 5-pin jacks (see this link for technical details) There are separate jacks for incoming MIDI signals (received from another instrument that is sending MIDI signals), and outgoing MIDI signals (i.e., MIDI signals that the instrument creates and sends to another device).
In my frustration finding a tool that can easily split and join MPEG1 and MPEG2 files without rendering, I stumbled upon this little gem: mpgtx
It is a command line program thar runs on Mac,PC, and Unix systems. There is a GUI for the Mac version available.
So let's say you had a directory of 800 MPEG1 files that have an intro that is about 3-4 seconds long and you want to remove those annoying intros. Just run
On Windows, Unix & Mac run this from the command prompt:
mpgtx -s *.mpg [00:00:3.00-]
The best way to use it though is in a script so you can customize the output name.

Below is a rough collection of notes following the narrative lab seminar at AVIT UK 2003. If anyone who attended thinks there appears to be anything missing, we've forgotten about it and need a nudge about it so please email me to alter the document.
DMX 512 is (currently) the most popular of digital lighting control standards. There are others, but they are of incidental interest to most of you gentle readers. Often referred to as simply DMX, there is a wealth of pro-sumer and professional gear supporting this protocol. The most common use is to control AC light dimmers for stage lighting purposes.
DMX is pretty straightforward as a protocol, there are some details at the bit level regarding frames and packets, but they are typically not of concern to the general user.
This chapter deals with the concept and the components of the MIDI-Protocol. will contain some unavoidable computer science terms and concepts, so to have the most fun with it i recommend running some midi analysing software like midiox (PC) or midi-monitor (MAC) and try reproducing the provided examples.
Commands
MIDI is an extensive set of commands which electronic devices use to control each other. A MIDI command consists of a few (usually 2 or 3) "data bytes" (like the data bytes within files that you have on your computer's hard drive).
I purchased this tidy little unit late last year to accommodate the growing needs of the a MIDI VJ Rig. It works seamlessly with both Mac and PC, and is powered by the USB port alone. It has two MIDI inputs, and four MIDI ous that make it perfect for a small studio, or cheaper alternative to the Emagic - Unitor 8.
Is size is a huge plus.
this is a tutorial on getting your wacom tablet to be able to be used as a midi controller, for audio, VJing or any other midi applications.l
first of all, this will only work on a windows computer, using a wacom tablet.
you need two programs;
midi tab: http://www.tinygod.com/files/Borogove_MIDITab.zip
and maple midi driver: http://www.marblesound.com/Maple_driver.html
install maple midi. when this is done you might have to restart, then you will have 4 'virtual' midi ports set up on your computer.
