The DJ2 is mainly targeted at users of the "Traktor" DJ software by Native Instruments. For that reason, it is not freely configurable but has some hardwired functions and sends fixed midi-values.
Anyway, it is still possible to use this controller with other (VJ)softwares, because in many softwares you can root incoming midi-signals freely to software controls.
Example:
I use the DJ2 in combination with a Faderfox LD2 and modul8. The LD2 is used for all layer-specific parameters and the DJ2 is used for global controls like A-B mix, master speed, master alpha, background and output color. The joystick looks like a joke but is actually a solid precision tool which can be used for X-Y values in filters or even scratching!
When choosing the DJ2 you should be aware that you may have to manipulate some midi-signals in your target software or between controller and software to achieve the intended settings. For example, the buttons send ON when pushed and OFF when released. For some effects like flash, invert etc. this might be just right; for others you may want to change this. As mentioned above, the unit can not be re-programmed (there is no setup software).
Apart from this, the DJ2 is a great tool of very good hardware quality, good ergonomics and tiny packing size. One main characteristic of the Faderfox product line is the modular approach which makes it possible to combine several modules to match your personal needs.
All Faderfox microcontrollers are midi-connected (midi-USB-interface required) and battery powered. Check out the website and manuals for detailled reference.
A suggestion how to set up the DJ2 for Modul8 can be found here:
