Had a hour to play with this mixer a few days ago in conjunction with the DVD01 Dual Player.
Features "quote"
Two separate cross-faders, one for audio and one for video, allow the user to mix audio and video separate from each other. The AVM01 provides professional audio/video effects. Video mixing options include fades, 96 wipe patterns, picture-in-picture, along with chroma key (blue screen), and luma screen (black screen) capability for superimposing images. There are two video effect sections with mosaic, strobe, freeze, paint and invert, which allow for multiple simultaneous effects. With its easy to use joystick, wipes and picture-in-picture effects are simpler to control than ever before.
Other key features include: ten background color options, four video channels with two composite and two S-video inputs (hook up your camera, DVD or VCR), two S-video and two composite outputs, four video monitor outputs, three stereo audio inputs and one mic input with audio cueing section and headphone output, two stereo main audio outputs and a universal power supply

So whats it like?
Its easy to use and the layout of buttons and labelling is good.
The effects are very basic in fact my MX10 has more levels of effects than this unit. ie The mosiac effect on the numark has three levels of mosiac to choose from. MX10 has eight off the top of my head.
The luma & chroma key effects are non adjustable other than by the cross fader. so you can tell the mixer how much of the opposite side you wish to blend in but you cant tell it how much area to replace unlike the V4 or other higer end mixers.
You can auto fade from one source to another and you can select how fast this happens but its not like the V4 where its bounces between the two sources. Its a one way fade.
I did not spend any time going thru every single wip for fade. They seem pretty standard the ones I checked out. I would question the 96 wipes claim but I need more time to suss that one out and update the review.
My major gripe is the video fader & audio fader being seperate. The video fader feels like someone has spilt coca cola down it and the audio fader feels like silk. In fact you can see that the audio fader is a replaceable component but the video is more of a built in item. Its hard to cross fade both in unison because of the different feel to each fader. You cant assign the audio fader to follow the video or vice versa.
The audio implementation is a tad shoddy also. One level fader for both audio inputs. No eq or gain to balance everything out before it hits the crossfader. If one input is higher then the other then you have to use the cross fader to balance then out. Kind of yukky. If you chop to the other side you better remember where the level was or else when you chop back the levels will be out of whack.
The cueing is OK. You can listen to any of the inputs and blend how much of the cue or output mix you want in the headphones. Pretty standard stuff I guess.
All n all this unit feels like an MX10 or 12 in a new updated box with some added features. Its good to have the same basic functionality but under warranty and more servicable too I guess.
Its not perfect but its a lot cheaper than a V4 and Xone92 midi combo. Good for a someone starting out maybe.
