while not an actual VJing program, blender can be used to render visual effects for content, and with the game engine being improved by each release, it is possible to be used for Real time controled content for live performances.
Blender 3D is recruiting more and more people per release to this fine piece of open source software for its powerful modeling, texturing and animating tools, as well as its use of the high powered scripting language 'Python" which lets you build just about anything onto the standalone program. be it import/export, hair generation, 3d fractal generation, disributed rendering, landscape genration. the list goes on.

The modeling capabilities are quite powerful, though lacking some tools from other expensive programs, even advance 3D models will be able to create anything they can dream of using the tools at there disposal. a large image gallery is avalible at http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Images.151.0.html

Animating tools include armatures, RVK(relational Vertex Keys) NLA (non-Linear Animation) and Constraints. allowing for organic animation such as humans and animals.

texturing, includes UV maping, Vertex painting as well as numours procedual textures.

Recently a Raytrace render has been added, allowing proper reflections, refractions, soft shadows, AO (ambent occlusion) angular maps as well as other impressive tools.

also included is a particle genorator, video sequence editor and a Game engine. which each new release every few months new features are quickly and easily learned.

this has only scrached the surface of the program, the best way to learn it is just down load a version for your OS (avalible for 9 OS's) and look though tutorials at the blender user forums at www.elysiun.com
